A great trivia quiz is one of the most engaging and viral forms of interactive content. In a trivia quiz, you put down any number of questions (up to 25) and mark the right answer for each. The end user gets to answer each question and then see immediately whether or not they got it right, before moving along to the next question. At the end of the quiz, they see how many questions they got right.
How to make a trivia quiz:
To create a trivia quiz, just go to your dashboard, click on “Create” and then on “Trivia Quiz,” and fill in your questions and results.
Choose a cover image, put in your questions (remember to mark the right answer) and fill in the Results, which will be displayed based on people’s score when they complete the quiz. You can use the same text and image for all results, or add more to display something different based on scores.
You can save a draft to save your progress and continue later, and when you’re ready you can just click “Publish” and you’re done – the quiz goes live. Read on for tips on making a really great trivia quiz.
Best practices and tips for making great trivia quizzes:
- Number of questions: Too few questions, and you miss out on vital engagment potential. Too many questions, and people may lose interest and quit before completing the quiz. We find around 8-12 questions to be a good middle ground (the technical maximum is 25.)
- Think about your audience: As with all engaging content, the most crucial thing is to have a clear concept of who the audience is, and matching the content to their interests, needs, and abilities. Make sure the quiz content is interesting to your audience, and be careful not to make the quiz too hard or too easy, and results will soon follow.
- Start small: When you first start, you may want to begin with a minimal quiz just to see how it looks – put in your first two questions and one result, save a draft, and get a preview of how your quiz is shaping up. It’s easier to adjust your content before posting it.
- Start easy: You may want to have quizzes go back and forth between easier and harder questions, but in most cases it is good to start with the easiest questions and increase difficulty incrementally. This way, people aren’t scared off by the first questions, and will stick around to try the hardest ones before seeing their score.
- Careful not to give it away: If only one answer makes any sense, or if one answer is far more detailed than all of the rest, the quiz might be too easy to guess.
- Results matter: The text and image presented at the end of the quiz (“results”) are very important. (You can have as many as 30 different results, but you probably want far less than that.) Make sure to craft results that will make people want to share your quiz on social networks!
- Keep it positive: In particular, make the results positive, even the worst results – people usually don’t want to share something that makes them feel bad or look bad!
- Use images: Images catch people’s eyes and imaginations, attracting attention to your quiz and keeping participants around. Choose good-looking images, especially for the quiz’s cover photo. Check out our favorite sources for good-looking free images.
- Image sizes: Quizzes look best with images, and great trivia quizzes with images look best when all of them can be displayed in the same size. We recommend cropping the photos to a uniform aspect ratio – we like using the wide 2:1 aspect ratio. It has the added benefit of faring well in previews on social networks.
